CEREC Same Day Crowns provided by Osborne Dentistry in Lebanon, OR

A sad tooth being pulled out of a row of happy teeth at Osborne Dentistry in Lebanon, ORWhen possible, it is best to have your natural teeth restored and repaired. However, our team at Osborne Dentistry understands that this is not always possible, especially once a damaged or decayed tooth has become painful or infected. That is why we offer tooth extractions among our many services.

However, our professionals do not simply extract your tooth and send you on your way. Our team will develop a customized treatment plan that involves future restorations. We will also provide detailed aftercare instructions so that your recovery is as comfortable as possible.

Are There More Than One Type of Extraction?

There are two basic types of extractions. The more common type is called a simple extraction because it does not involve any incisions being made into your gum line and is generally pretty quick to complete. This type of extraction is used if your tooth is damaged or infected and is completely exposed above your gum line.

When completing a simple extraction, our professional will administer an anesthetic to the surgical site before starting. We will then take hold of your tooth with a metal handheld tool called forceps. To remove the tooth, we will gently manipulate it and pull on it in a side-to-side motion until it is freed from your gum line.

Sometimes, removing a tooth using this method is a little more involved. If the tooth is tightly lodged into your gums, we may need to shatter the tooth. We can then remove each section piece by piece without further aggravating your gums.

The other type of extraction is called a surgical extraction and is performed when a tooth is impacted. An impacted tooth is a tooth that is either partially or completely underneath the gum line. This most commonly occurs with wisdom teeth. After administering the anesthetic, our professional will need to make an incision into your gums to expose the tooth before removing it with forceps.

Is There a Long Recovery When Having a Tooth Extracted?

Getting a tooth pulled involves a relatively short recovery, especially with a simple extraction. Most patients experience some soreness and tenderness for a few days to a week. If your tooth was impacted, you will have received sutures after the procedure and will probably need a few additional days to heal. Our team will prescribe pain medication, if necessary, to keep you comfortable during this time.

Can I Get My Extracted Teeth Replaced Later?

You can replace your extracted teeth with one of several restorations at a later date. To help keep your jawbone healthy enough for future restorations, our team will likely recommend that you receive a tooth socket graft at the time of your extraction. This involves the placement of a bone-like material into the socket created by your extraction. This material will fuse with your jawbone and provide a good foundation for dental implants if you opt for them in the future.

These treatments help us to protect teeth that have suffered serious issues, restoring their health and their normal functions. A common restoration for teeth affected by more significant damage is a crown. While effective, the fact that crowns typically take two appointments can be problematic. At Osborne Dentistry, we can provide ceramic crowns in just one appointment with CEREC.

The Issue with Two Appointments

The standard dental crown procedure requires two separate appointments. While it might not seem like all that big of a deal, there are some significant disadvantages to this. One of the biggest drawbacks is the fact that you have to wear a temporary crown. This crown is meant to protect the tooth until your actual crown is done. However, it may not always be effective. It can come loose or fall out. When this happens, the prepared tooth is at risk for damage and bacterial invasion.

Another significant drawback is the fact that you need to schedule two different appointments. Your schedule is already busy enough. Having to schedule two appointments can interfere with your normal life. Moreover, if the crown needs to go back to the lab, you will need to schedule yet another appointment.

CEREC Technology

CEREC uses some of the latest, cutting-edge dental technology. Instead of standard impressions, digital impressions are taken. This is done using a handheld wand that takes a digital image of your teeth and gums. The image then goes onto the computer and creates a 3D model of your mouth.

Using this 3D model, we can create an incredibly accurate dental restoration. There is much greater accuracy with this technology than there is with traditional impressions and models.

CEREC technology also involves the use of an in-house milling unit. This is the machine that creates your crown. The crown is cut out of a block of ceramic that we place into the machine after it receives the information from the crown we designed.

How Getting a CEREC Crown Works

Getting your CEREC crown begins just like getting a regular crown. We first need to prepare the damaged tooth. This means we need to remove tooth enamel. Next, we capture the digital impression and create your crown. After the crown is created, it is made right in our in-house lab. Once finished, we check its fit. If any adjustments are needed, they are made right then and there. There are no temporary restorations and no additional visits. This helps to avoid the complications associated with temporary crowns and prevents you from having to take more time out of your already busy schedule. Once your crown fits perfectly, it is cemented onto the tooth.

What Else Can CEREC Do?

CEREC is frequently used to make ceramic crowns. That is not all this technology can be used to do. It can also be used to create other restorations such as bridges, crowns for dental implants, inlays, onlays, and more. It is important to know that CEREC can only be used to make ceramic crowns in a single appointment. If you are getting a traditional metal crown, you will still need to have two appointments. With CEREC, you can receive a perfectly natural-looking dental crown in only one appointment.
