Porcelain Crown provided by Osborne Dentistry in Lebanon, OR

A sad tooth being pulled out of a row of happy teeth at Osborne Dentistry in Lebanon, ORWhen possible, it is best to have your natural teeth restored and repaired. However, our team at Osborne Dentistry understands that this is not always possible, especially once a damaged or decayed tooth has become painful or infected. That is why we offer tooth extractions among our many services.

However, our professionals do not simply extract your tooth and send you on your way. Our team will develop a customized treatment plan that involves future restorations. We will also provide detailed aftercare instructions so that your recovery is as comfortable as possible.

Are There More Than One Type of Extraction?

There are two basic types of extractions. The more common type is called a simple extraction because it does not involve any incisions being made into your gum line and is generally pretty quick to complete. This type of extraction is used if your tooth is damaged or infected and is completely exposed above your gum line.

When completing a simple extraction, our professional will administer an anesthetic to the surgical site before starting. We will then take hold of your tooth with a metal handheld tool called forceps. To remove the tooth, we will gently manipulate it and pull on it in a side-to-side motion until it is freed from your gum line.

Sometimes, removing a tooth using this method is a little more involved. If the tooth is tightly lodged into your gums, we may need to shatter the tooth. We can then remove each section piece by piece without further aggravating your gums.

The other type of extraction is called a surgical extraction and is performed when a tooth is impacted. An impacted tooth is a tooth that is either partially or completely underneath the gum line. This most commonly occurs with wisdom teeth. After administering the anesthetic, our professional will need to make an incision into your gums to expose the tooth before removing it with forceps.

Is There a Long Recovery When Having a Tooth Extracted?

Getting a tooth pulled involves a relatively short recovery, especially with a simple extraction. Most patients experience some soreness and tenderness for a few days to a week. If your tooth was impacted, you will have received sutures after the procedure and will probably need a few additional days to heal. Our team will prescribe pain medication, if necessary, to keep you comfortable during this time.

Can I Get My Extracted Teeth Replaced Later?

You can replace your extracted teeth with one of several restorations at a later date. To help keep your jawbone healthy enough for future restorations, our team will likely recommend that you receive a tooth socket graft at the time of your extraction. This involves the placement of a bone-like material into the socket created by your extraction. This material will fuse with your jawbone and provide a good foundation for dental implants if you opt for them in the future.

Porcelain Crowns

A model of a crown Having a damaged tooth that needs repair can be unsettling. If it is decayed and keeping you up at night because of the pain, you might need a crown. Due to the advances in materials used in the dental field, you can now get a crown that looks identical to your surrounding teeth. No more bright gold or silver crowns that take away the look of your smile.

Porcelain crowns are now the most common material used in the dental field. Our professionals at Osborne Dentistry can provide you with a custom-made porcelain crown to cover that unsightly, damaged, or decayed tooth. Porcelain crowns repair functional damage while also giving a cosmetic boost to your smile.

What Sets Porcelain Crowns Apart?

Porcelain crowns are an excellent restoration option when the goal is a natural look. They allow our team to match the crown to your teeth better than any other material used for crowns. The common alternative to porcelain crowns is ceramic or a combination of ceramic and metal crowns.

Ceramic crowns can be color-matched as well, but they can be distinguished from real teeth under high-quality lighting, such as the fluorescent bulbs used in most corporate offices. They are also not as durable as porcelain crowns. Metal cored crowns that have a ceramic outer layer improve the durability but result in a dark center to your restoration.

Porcelain crowns offer a durability almost equivalent to that of metal crowns while maintaining that semi-translucent appearance of teeth. Porcelain crowns last anywhere from 10 to 20 years. This combination of durability, natural density, and color-matching ability makes them the hands-down choice for patients that want an inconspicuous restoration. If you want to get the most out of your porcelain crown, then it is vital that you practice good oral hygiene at home and come see us for regular professional cleanings every six months.

How Are Porcelain Crowns Installed?

Porcelain crowns are created and installed in a similar manner to other types of dental crowns. During your initial visit, our professional will examine the tooth that is set to be crowned. We will then file down the enamel of the tooth and get rid of any decay present. If necessary, we will administer a local anesthetic before beginning the process to ensure you are pain-free.

We will then take a mold of your tooth and send it to a lab and fit your tooth with a temporary crown. The lab will create your porcelain crown, which should be ready a few weeks after your initial visit. When you return, our team will make sure that your crown fits properly and will cement it in place, giving you a complete smile.

Porcelain is difficult to make material, which is why our team must be so careful during the fitting and planning process. Our goal is always to provide you with the best results and send you home satisfied. If you would like to learn more about porcelain crowns and find out if they are the right solution for you, it is time to come see us at Osborne Dentistry.
