A patient sitting in the dentist chair awaiting an exam If you are experiencing discomfort in your teeth or gums and are ready to get your oral health back on track, we have a quality dental care team that can get you the best treatment that fits your condition. Come see our professionals at Osborne Dentistry for a dental exam to identify the cause of your discomfort.

A dental exam is the first step on your journey to a brighter and healthier smile. Once you have completed your exam, our team will work with you to develop a custom treatment plan tailored to meet your needs. This will include follow-up exams and any necessary steps to improve the function and appearance of your smile.

What Happens During a Dental Exam?

A dental exam is a simple and non-invasive oral health procedure. During your exam, our professionals will carefully inspect every area of your oral cavity, including your gums and other soft tissue.

Your exam will be accompanied by a professional teeth cleaning. One of our team members will brush and floss your teeth, as well as check for symptoms of chronic conditions such as gum disease. We check for gum disease by measuring the depth of the naturally occurring pockets that exist between your teeth and gums. Once this is completed, we will also conduct an oral cancer screening to check for any abnormalities.

If this is your first exam with us, you will likely get X-rays as well. These images allow our professionals to better understand your oral health needs and get a complete view of your oral cavity. X-rays are updated as needed.

How Often Do I Need a Dental Exam?

According to the American Dental Association, you should receive an oral exam and cleaning every six months. Exams conducted in these intervals allows our team to monitor your oral health and provide feedback on your oral hygiene practices. Regular exams are also important because they allow our team to diagnose and treat any oral health conditions much earlier. If left untreated, conditions like decay can become substantially more serious and require multiple procedures to correct.

What If a Cavity Is Found?

If our team locates a cavity during your dental exam, we will let you know during your visit and discuss treatment options with you. The treatment that our team recommends will vary based on how severe the decay is. Minor cavities can often be treated during the very same visit through the use of a dental filling.

When placing a filling, we will administer a local anesthetic to keep you comfortable during the procedure. We will then drill out any decayed material from your tooth. A composite material is used to pack the hole and protect your tooth from further decay. This material will harden after our team finishes molding and shaping it.

Sports Guards

A woman placing her sports guard in during a ball game Your child's teeth are a lifelong investment that will benefit them for the rest of their life. As with all investments, it is important that their teeth are properly protected. One of the best ways to do so is to provide your child with a mouthguard when they are playing sports. However, not all mouthguards are created equal. The best mouthguards available are the custom-made variety like the ones provided by our team at Osborne Dentistry. These mouthguards are uniquely designed for your child and result in a perfect fit.

Should My Child Wear a Mouthguard?

Some sports, like football, require that youth participants wear mouthguards at all times. However, other sports and activities may not specifically require them, which leaves many parents wondering just when their child should be wearing a mouthguard.

As a general recommendation, it is a good idea for your child to wear a sports mouthguard when they are engaging in any sports-related activity that could result in an impact or fall. Many of these activities, like skateboarding, are often overlooked when considering the use of a mouthguard and can result in uncomfortable dental repairs.

What Types of Mouthguards Are There?

There are three main types of mouthguards that are available today. The first type is generic, a one-size-fits-all style of mouthguard. These types of mouthguards are the ones that can be bought in stores or online and are ready for immediate use. Non-fitted mouthguards are certainly better than no mouthguard at all but hardly offer your child adequate protection.

The second type of mouthguards is the boil and bite style. These guards are fitted at home and provide much better protection than the non-fitted style. They are fitted by boiling them, dipping them in cool water, and having your child bite down on the guard while the material is still pliable. The shortcoming of these mouthguards comes when they are improperly fitted.

The third and most precise style of mouthguards is the custom guards provided by our team. These guards are created using a mold of your child's teeth. Guards made in our office will precisely fit the contours of your child's smile and offer them the best protection. We can even make these custom mouthguards for children with braces.

How Long Do Mouthguards Last?

Sports mouthguards generally last approximately one sports season. If your child continuously plays sports throughout the year, the mouthguards should be replaced every six months. This is because mouthguards endure substantial shearing from your child's teeth and will begin to lose material in the areas that they are most needed.

Failing to replace mouthguards at normal intervals can increase your child's risk of damaging their teeth. Fortunately, the entire process is quick and painless for your child and can be completed during your scheduled visit. Oftentimes, our team can take care of the fitting process during your child's regular oral exam so that you do not have to schedule separate appointments.

If your child is preparing to play their first sport or if their mouthguard is in need of an upgrade, it is time to come see our team at Osborne Dentistry. You can schedule your appointment by calling 541-451-4300.
